Charles Spencer has been flooded with support following the loss of his family at Althorp

Charles Spencer has been backed by his fans as Princess Diana’s younger brother has revealed this his beloved pet dog, Otis had to be “put down” Friday night.

The earl shared a picture of the Labrador sitting on the doorstep of his extravagant home in Althorp as he confirmed the sad news. “Goodbye to Otis, our wonderful Labrador who had to be put down last nightt” Charles shared. “He was almost 13 years old. Otis will now join his dad Karoo and grandma Ella in a beautiful setting in the Park at @althorphouse.”

The father-of-seven added: “Everyone at Althorp loved Otis – several people here today spoke of him being a ‘total legend’. The place won’t be the same without his wise, sweet and intelligent presence. it was extremely special.”

Fans were quick to console the star, with one writing: ‘I’m so sorry Charles. I’m sure he had a wonderful life with you. I have two elderly dogs and I fear that the day will come when we have to say goodbye because I have never experienced it before. Sending you a big virtual hug.”

A second posted: “He looked absolutely beautiful – calm, intelligent and gorgeous. I’m truly sorry for your terrible loss,” while a third mused: “So sorry to hear you had to say goodbye to at Otis. He was a nice old boy and a great trench mate.”

It was not the easiest year for the earl, as he was separated from his wife, Countess Karen Spencer, but also spoke about the sexual and physical abuse he suffered while at boarding school.

The strain of revisiting the abuse is believed to have led Charles and Karen to divorce, and in this case Mail on SundayCharles revealed: “I just want to dedicate myself to all my children and my grandchildren and I wish Karen all the happiness in the future.”

At the time of the split, Countess Karen was overwhelmed by the support of fans. Thanking them, she wrote: “Just wanted to say I’ve been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support. Thank you, it meant a lot to me. Just processing at the moment. I will get back to you. soon.”

Karen, 52, married Charles in 2011 after being set up on a date with him in Los Angeles the year before. The couple married four months after the earl dropped to one knee on the grounds of the family estate.
