Bicyclist dies in Phoenix crash with truck; impairment suspected, police say

Phoenix police are investigating a suspected drunk driving collision that left a bicyclist dead on Monday night.

Officers arrived at the scene of a collision around 11:30 pm near Cave Creek Road and Dynamite Boulevard to find 37-year-old Michael Hutchinson with life-threatening injuries.

Hutchinson was hit by a GMC Terrain SUV driven by an 18-year-old man, according to police, which was heading south on Cave Creek Road.

The teenager lost focus of the road when he looked at his radio and looked up to see Hutchinson in front of him. Police said he couldn’t stop and collided with the bicyclist.

The 18-year-old pulled over, called 911 and remained on scene until officers arrived.

Hutchinson did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Impairment and speed were believed to be factors in the crash, police said, and final charges will be made when the toxicology report and reconstruction are completed.

The investigation remained ongoing.
