Years of neglect behind sewage condition, says LG

New Delhi: LG VK Saxena on Friday said the condition of three major canals in the capital was the result of “years of neglect” and agencies were making concerted efforts to clean them.
In a series of posts on X, Saxena said the sewer cleaning work would be completed soon and long-term measures would be taken to provide relief joint with water. He added that since his last visit to inspect the three drains – Baraullah, Kushak and Sunehri – on August 4, more than 1,200 metric tonnes of silt and garbage had been removed from the drains and work was continuing.
The LG flagged the “appalling” condition of the three drains during its inspection and noted that they were full of silt and debris.
In his X posts on Friday, Saxena said, “The city’s major drains, clogged with silt and garbage, are mainly responsible for the waterlogging and hellish conditions that result in Delhi every year. This state of Delhi sewerage is clearly the result years of neglect and carelessness.”
He added that the Barapullah, Kushak and Sunehri drains were responsible for draining water from 24% of the entire Delhi area, but they were not functioning even at 10% of their capacity. “The reason is clear. The cleaning work it started after my visit on August 4 and in the last 10 days more than 1,200 tonnes of silt has been removed from these canals,” Saxena posted on X.
“Despite the combined efforts of all agencies involved, much remains to be done in cleaning up these three major canals. I assure the people of Delhi that this work will be completed very soon and long-term measures will be taken to help improve the water connection,” he added. Saxena has also attached some photos with her posts showing the current condition of these drains.
The poor condition of the three drains was said to be the main reason behind widespread water logging in central and south Delhi in the last week of June with the first monsoon rains.
