Violent clashes outside a Southport mosque following yesterday’s stabbing attack appear to have subsided, with officers still at the scene.

Merseyside Police said the riot started when a large group of people – believed to be supporters of the English Defense League – threw objects at the mosque.

Bottles, bricks and traffic cones were among the items thrown, with police vehicles set on fire, a shop looted and officers injured in the chaos.

The violence appears to be linked to several false allegations spread online about the 17-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with yesterday’s attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club.

Three children – Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva Aguiar – were killed and eight others were injured.

Five of the children and two adults who were trying to protect them are still in critical condition.

The unnamed suspect was born in Wales, Merseyside Police previously said, but there were false claims he was an asylum seeker who arrived in Britain by boat.
