SacAlphas Backpack Giveaway Supports South Natomas Families

SacAlphas Backpack Giveaway Supports South Natomas Families

By Siany Harts | OBSERVER Staff writer

The South Natomas Community Center held a backpack giveaway the morning of August 10th to support area families in need of school supplies. Members of the Sacramento Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., also known as SacAlphas, and their partners teamed up with the City of Sacramento to host this event for the second year in a row.

The giveaway is part of SacAlpha’s youth program, the Alpha Academy. Chapter President Antonio Johnson recognizes the continued need for resources for many families in Sacramento. Nearly 100 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to youth ages 5 to late teens.

“If you think about it, if you don’t have enough financial resources, you might be deciding between giving your kids the supplies they need and what you’re going to eat for dinner. We all know from the schools we’ve been to that there have been kids in the classroom that didn’t have school supplies or had supplies and didn’t eat,” Johnson said.
