Nick Sorensen evaluates the new additions to the 49ers Secondary

SANTA CLARA — New defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen was asked about the new additions to the 49ers secondary on Wednedsay. Here’s what Sorensen had to say, courtesy of the 49ers PR department.

Q: We see CB Renardo Green out there and sometimes he’s on the right side, sometimes he’s on the left side, sometimes he’s in the nickel. Are you impressed with what he’s managed to digest so far?

SORENSEN: “Absolutely. It was a process, but he got better every day. Like I said, even when we talk about (DB Deommodore Lenoir) Dmo being able to get inside and outside, it’s hard to do as a rookie. But he puts in the work and you’ve seen that with a lot of our starters. The way they can excel so quickly, you can tell they put their time into it. We have serious guys, they care, they put in the extra time. And they did it in their spare time. also. That’s why when they came back and not only did they keep things, but you saw an increase in how they improved. This shows that, of this guy, we have the right guy. I knew that about the guys I targeted and got. But to see that with him and some of the other guys, it’s really encouraging because that’s who we are.”

Q: Two picks from S George Odum today. He seems to have run with the first teams as a safety and slotted as a special teams guy for so long. But how viable is he as a safety?

SORENSEN: “He is a footballer. As I said, he did very well last year and this time. And just, in terms of improving at the safety spot, he has all the tools. He has continued to feel comfortable in the system, where, again, he can play quickly. And he made a correction today about being on duty the other day when they got an explosive. So it was great to see that it’s not just about skill, it’s about comfort, being able to make corrections and keep playing. Because he’s aggressive and he’ll tell you he’s not going to drop the ball. He’s not just a special teams player, he’s a football player and that translates. He’s doing well.”

Q: Going back to the secondary, obviously they were able to force more interceptions there towards the end. Why do you think they were so effective? And then as we get closer to the end of camp here, how much confidence do you have in these guys going into the season, especially in this happy league that we have?

SORENSEN: “I like that they are competing and they have improved every day. We’re disruptive, but again, it’s a rush cover, working together. I think a lot of times, most of the drills we do are team periods. You have people around the quarterback and sometimes it’s a coverage that forces a sack or he has to take an extra hook or there’s somebody around, he has to slide into the pocket. The main thing is that our guys work hard on the details. That’s what we’ve really focused on this offseason and this training camp, is how much more can we get? How can we fix every minute detail? They all take coaching, they love it, they’re cool people. They hold each other accountable, compete and try to get it done.”
