Chiefs GM Brett Veach thanks former franchise quarterback: ‘He established a winning tradition’

One of the highlights of training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs this year was the appearance of legendary tight end Alex Smith.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach was one of Smith’s guests for SiriusXM The town hall in the cantonment, on Tuesday. He used his time to give flowers and thanks to his former quarterback.

“I know it’s too humble, but would any of us be here now if it wasn’t for this guy right here? (Alex Smith),” Veach said, “He’s established a winning tradition and culture, and I mean, in this league, it’s so hard to have success and sustained success.”

Smith was named the Chiefs’ starting quarterback shortly after Andy Reid took over as head coach in 2013. In five seasons as Kansas City’s starter, Smith won 50 games and threw for over 17,000 yards and 102 touchdowns. touchdowns.

“I don’t think any of us would be here, including the guys you see on the field right now, if this guy didn’t come in here and do what he did and pave the way for all of us,” Veach said . “So, thank you, Alex, for everything.”

Since retiring, Smith has enjoyed a growing media career and continues to be a welcome face whenever he’s in Kansas City.
