City of Phoenix is rolling out new hybrid buses to help fight pollution and noise

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Valley residents can now travel in a new and sustainable mode of public transport.

Last week, the Phoenix Department of Public Transportation launched its first hybrid bus designed to pollute less and drive more quietly and efficiently.

It is one of 20 buses that will be launched during the month. The buses are part of the city’s goal to reach a zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

“Phoenix is proud to lead the charge toward a greener future where our residents can breathe cleaner air while driving them to their destinations,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

The buses use a combination of hybrid engines, batteries and a biodiesel fueled engine for greater fuel economy.

The new Flyer Xcelsior Hybrid-Electric bus can accommodate 35 passengers and up to 53 standing passengers. It has three wheelchair zones and a range of over 500 miles.

“We definitely want to make sure they work in our elements. Phoenix is hot. We have more space than many other cities, so we need to make sure our buses are able to travel long distances,” said Brenda Yanez, public information officer for the City of Phoenix Department of Public Transportation.

Yanez says the city will have electric buses on the road next year.

“We are trying different technologies. We try to do our part with the resources we have to help our environment,” explained Yanez.

A federal grant funds about 85 percent of the cost of the new buses, and the city pays for the rest.
