Reeves, Smith in race for Lawton City Council Ward 2

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The race is on for the Lawton Ward 2 City Council seat and both David Reeves and RL Smith are up for the challenge.

The two men are running against Sherri Fox, Justin Harrill and Jervis Jackson Jr. for the seat.

Smith is a former Lawton police officer. He said he believes the city of Lawton is growing, adding that he wants to help it continue to build.

“I think everything is going in a positive direction,” he said. “I would just like to continue in a positive direction. Probably, like many other people, the first thing that worries me is homelessness.”

While Reeves said he would like to focus on improving the line of communication between citizens and city government.

“I would do my best to at least keep the people in Ward 2 more directly informed and stay accessible in the area,” Reeves said.

Both men will face three other candidates in the August 27 election.

Kelly Harris currently holds the seat, but after serving her four-year term, she will not seek re-election.

Reeves said his empathy for others makes him the best fit for the job.

“I know what it’s like to go through hard times,” Reeves explained. “I’m going to worry more about people’s quality of life than their broad economic forecasts.”

As a longtime Ward 2 resident, Smith said his connection to the community will put him in the lead.

“I live in Ward 2, my kids were raised in Ward 2. I’m invested in this community,” Smith said. “I’ve just lived here, I’ve seen a lot of great things happen here, and I feel like I belong here. I love this community.”

Early voting for this election begins on August 22.
