An ongoing exhibition at the Bund 18 Jiushi Art Gallery in Shanghai presents the systematic training of the basic principles of art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), a leading visual arts institution in China.

Until September 8, the exhibition called Kungfu-True Nature features over 130 artworks by students and faculty from the Foundation Course Department of the School of Fine Arts at CAFA.

Some of China’s most famous artists, such as Li Hua, Dong Xiwen and Jin Shangyi, are featured in the exhibition, all of whom used to teach at the institution. CAFA’s history dates back to 1918, when its predecessor, the Beiping National Art School, was founded.

The foundation course department was established in 2001, dedicated to the formation of the basic principles of art in visual art, which lays a solid foundation for artistic creation, according to Bai Xiaogang, the exhibition’s academic director.
