North Fort Myers families say bus routes for students have been eliminated

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — As afternoon rain drenched the street Friday, parents whose children attend school in North Fort Myers said the weather was the least of their worries.

“They like to do burnouts around that corner,” said Stephanie, a parent whose children attend school in the area.

She says dangerous road conditions are one of the many reasons she doesn’t agree with the Lee County School District removing their bus route.

A school district spokesman said students don’t get a bus if they live within two miles of the school.

To change that, the district said a student must have a disability or the route home must have dangerous walking conditions for a bus to be provided.

Kathy Shimko, whose grandchildren attend North Fort Myers Academy for The Arts, said walking them home would be dangerous for anyone, especially a 10-year-old.

“And I asked one of the gentlemen who worked at the school … do you want to go to that neighborhood? He said no, that’s why I don’t live there,” Shimko said.

On Friday, Fox 4 Community Correspondent Colton Chavez reached out to the Lee County School District to address parents’ concerns.

A spokesperson for the district had the following to say:

“The school and our transportation department are aware of the concerns and are reviewing the situation to determine if the bus can be reinstated”

Friday, it’s a decision families said they hope the school district follows through on.

“It’s ridiculous as if you’re giving us our buses back,” Shimko said.

A spokesman for the Lee County School District said a decision could be made by next week.
