3 homes damaged by gunfire in Hedingham neighborhood, site of Raleigh mass shooting

Raleigh police are investigating after three homes were damaged by gunfire overnight in the same neighborhood where a mass shooting killed five people in 2022.

Officers responded at 3:47 a.m. Wednesday to reports of shots fired at a home in the 1900 block of Shadow Glen Drive in the Hedingham neighborhood, the Raleigh Police Department said in an email. No injuries were reported.

No arrests have been made, but police have collected evidence and said they are following all leads in the investigation.

“We are deeply concerned about this incident and are relieved that no one was injured,” the department said in a statement. “However, we recognize the impact such an incident has on a community still healing from the mass shooting of October 2022. We ask that anyone with information related to this incident contact Crimestoppers. This includes security camera footage that identifies suspicious people or vehicles in the area.”

On October 13, 2022, seven people were shot in a Raleigh neighborhood near the Neuse River Greenway. Five were killed, including the alleged shooter’s 16-year-old brother and a Raleigh police officer.

Austin Thompson is charged with five counts of murder in the deaths of his brother James, Nicole Connors, Susan Karnatz, Mary Elizabeth Marshall and Gabriel Torres.

His trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 22, 2025, in Wake County Superior Court, District Attorney Lorrin Freeman previously told The News & Observer.
