Wake up with the Washington Examiner: Tips on Harris’ debate strategy, ‘Team’ member safety and DNC protest plans

Wake up with the Washington Examiner: Tips on Harris’ debate strategy, ‘Team’ member safety and DNC protest plans

Looking back at what was – in Harris’ last debate performance

With the Vice President Kamala Harris avoiding questions from the press, the debate against the former vice president Mike Pence in 2020 offers insight into his strategy this time with the former president Donald Trump. She and the former president are set to battle it out at an ABC debate on September 10.

Two viral moments emerged from the 2020 debate, including when a black fly nested in Pence’s white hair and six times Harris told Pence, “I’m talking,” a line he recently revived at a rally campaign in Michigan when protesters disrupted it. .

“On day one, Joe Biden is going to repeal that tax law. He’s going to get away with it,” Harris said in 2020 of Trump’s tax cuts, while Pence argued that repealing the cuts would raise taxes on the middle class. President Joe Biden did not repeal Trump’s tax cuts when he took office, though Harris now says he will if elected.

Another topic that is likely to come up again is fracking. During Harris’ presidential cycle, she said unequivocally that she was in favor of banning fracking. During the debate, she said, “Joe Biden is not going to end fracking. He was very clear about that.” Now, a Harris campaign aide has told news outlets that the vice president is no longer in favor of banning the practice either.

Harris’ dramatic flair has been in full form during the COVID-19-era debate and will likely be again in September. She offered some word salad and lots of eyebrow raising, head shaking, pointing, smiling and laughing. In a powerful moment, she pointed to her record in prosecuting criminals, something she has also focused on in recent speeches, claiming she knows “Donald Trump’s type”.

“I’m not going to sit here and be lectured by the vice president on what it means to enforce the laws of our country,” she said when Pence accused her of being soft on crime. “I’m the only one on this stage who has personally witnessed everything from child sexual assault to homicide.”

Ilhan Omar survives the primary while other members of “The Team” fall

Representative. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) won 56.2% of the vote last night in her primary against the challenger Don Samuels. The progressive representative met Samuels before, in 2022, when she defeated him by 2 points. Because the last election race was so close, she hung on for a hard-fought primary this year.

Samuels primarily targeted Omar for her pro-Palestinian stance, trying to make the same successful argument that knocked other members of “The Team” off their seats this cycle. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Cory Bush (D-MO) both lost their seats after primaries that centered on their comments about the Israel-Hamas war and campus protests.

Samuels, a former Minneapolis city councilman, entered the race after Oct. 7 and said Omar was a “pawn for Hamas.”

However, the financial support Bowman and Bush’s challengers had from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the largest pro-Israel political action committee, was not as strong for Samuels. Bowman’s challenger, George Latimerbenefited from AIPAC’s $14 million spent on ads attacking Bowman, while the PAC spent only $19,000 on Omar’s race.

Omar also had a huge fundraising advantage against Samuels and benefited from strong relationships with top Democrats such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who campaigned alongside her.

The real estate industry is bracing for changes as the new rules are introduced

Big changes are coming to the real estate industry this week.

Previously, sellers expected to pay the realtor a 5% or 6% fee when selling their homes. About half of this would go to the estate agent selling the house and the rest would go to the buyers agent, Stephen O’Connorpresident of the Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis at George Washington University, told the The Washington Examiner Zachary Halaschak.

The National Association of Realtors was sued by sellers who accused the organization of raising fees. The changes are the result of the $418 million settlement and the NAR’s demand to change commission rules.

As of August 17, sellers will now need to sign an agreement with the agent.

“So the seller is no longer responsible for paying the commission structure or fees associated with representing the buyer,” O’Connor said. “So right now, as of August 17, if I want to go out and buy a house, I’m going to have to negotiate with a real estate agent and sign a buyer’s representation agreement and negotiate what I’m going to pay out of pocket. .. the fee that person will charge for his professional services.”

The purpose of the change is to increase tax transparency.

Anti-Israel Network Continues Massive DNC Protest Despite Legal Hurdles

Nearly 100 organizations have planned protests outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week, according to exclusive reports from The Washington Examiner Gabe Kaminsky.

A report by the NGO monitor group Monitor details pro-Palestinian groups that have plans for the Democratic convention, including CODEPINK, the Palestinian Feminist Collective, Students for Justice in Palestine Chicago and American Muslims for Palestine Chicago.

“The same NGO network that orchestrated and funded mobs chanting ‘Intifada now’ on college campuses and in major cities will harass and intimidate DNC delegates and attendees in Chicago.” Gerald Steinbergthe founder and president of the NGO Monitor, said in a statement.

Democrats have faced a cross-party divide when it comes to the Israel-Hamas war and campus protests over it. During the presidential primaries, more than 650,000 voters wrote “unemployed” instead of choosing Biden because of his support for Israel. Harris, who has since become the Democratic nominee, has faced similar criticism to Biden, although she has been friendly to the Palestinian cause.
