Phoenix police are investigating an alleged drunken driving crash that left a bicyclist dead Monday night.

Officers arrived at the scene of the collision near Cave Creek Road and Dynamite Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. to find 37-year-old Michael Hutchinson with life-threatening injuries.

Hutchinson was struck by a GMC Terrain SUV driven by an 18-year-old man, according to police, who was heading south on Cave Creek Road.

The teenager lost his focus on the road when he looked at his radio and looked up to see Hutchinson in front of him. Police said he was unable to stop and collided with the bicyclist.

The 18-year-old pulled over, called 911 and remained at the scene until officers arrived.

Hutchinson did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Impairment and speed were considered factors in the crash, police said, and final charges will be made when the toxicology report and reconstruction are completed.

The investigation remained ongoing.
