Netflix’s most-watched horror movie of all time is perfect summer viewing

Under Paris Netflix

I can’t stop talking about Under ParisNetflix’s summer dive into aquatic horror, courtesy of French director Xavier Gens (BORDER). In 2010, another French extreme pioneer, Alexandre Aja, set the theater scene on fire with Piranha 3Da stupid, stupid 3D bloodbath that offered more nudity and gore than you could get through a Richard Dreyfuss cameo.

Swimming to Netflix success

That we had two French directors diving into similar territory is also remarkable Under Paris it was the kind of low-key, gory, gory aquatic horror that the scene had been lacking for some time. While the creature feature currently holds the title of the most watched monster movie ever on the world’s biggest streaming platform, the thriller ride is now swimming towards being Netflix’s most watched non-English movie ever.

On Netflix: Reaching the Top 10 in 93 countries in its first week, this horror about a shark in the Seine is “worthy of swimming in its wake The jaws,” exclaims Variety.

under Paris’ competition for first place is another curious oddity. Roar Uthaug of Cold Pray and wave fame (both very good, in particular Cold Pray) debuted in 2022 Returna disaster epic steeped in Norse mythology. It was a little scary, a little honest, and a lot, well…cool? He was a giant troll, come on!

Check out a trailer for that Netflix thriller below:

Then it’s the battle of the cars. Or, more precisely, the battle between the ancient troll and the genetically modified super shark. Both also have fairly solid environmental fables at their core, which if you know I’m quite sick.

We’ll keep you posted here at Dread Central with all the latest news, including rumors Return continuation, a possible one Under Paris continuation (Gens expressed interest) and confirmed Drag 2. If you’re a fan of creature features, what a time to be alive.
